To everyone’s surprise, and one of the biggest upsets in Pan American table tennis, Edward Ly of Canada is the 2024 Pan Am Cup CHAMPION. Congratulations!

14th Seed, and participating as a replacement for Eugene Wang, Edward managed to win the Pan Am Cup while losing only one game. After beating the 2nd Seed in the first round (Andy Peirera), Edward seemed to be gaining momentum and won all his remaining matches, including the final, in total domination.

It seems that Edward has moved to a new level in his table tennis career and is now able to play at a very high level even in close matches at the end of games. This used to be his weakness. But now it has become his strength. He won many close gamesand showed that his “emotional intelligence” is now maturing, which helps him win in tight situations.

This win earns Edward Ly a berth to the ITTF Singles World Cup to be played in Macao in April.

In the women’s competition, honourable mention goes to Mo Zhang who defeated the 1st seed (Adriana Diaz) in the quarter finals, only to lose to Amy Wang of the USA in the semifinals.

Ivy Liao also had a successful tournament. As the 16th seed, and lowest ranked player in the competition, she had a respectable exit in the quarter finals at the hands of Lilly Zhang of the USA who reached the finals.
