At just 14 years old, Kevin Murphy picked up a Table Tennis paddle in Whitehorse, and never looked back. What followed has been a 50-year journey of athletic excellence, coaching leadership, and unmatched commitment to the sport in the Yukon.
Kevin’s competitive achievements are remarkable. As a player, he represented Yukon at two Canada Winter Games (1975 and 1979) and two Arctic Winter Games (1974 and 1978). He returned again and again in both roles—athlete and coach—throughout the years: Canada Winter Games in 1983, 1987, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023; and Arctic Winter Games in 1980, 1982, 1996, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2023, and 2024 (with the 2020 event unfortunately cancelled despite the team being trained and ready). He also participated in the Western Canada Summer Games in 1987 and competed in four Northern BC Winter Games in the 1980s.
In national-level play, Kevin competed in 10 Canadian Table Tennis Championships, starting with the first one hosted in Whitehorse in 1974 and culminating in Edmonton in 2007. Along the way, he was crowned Yukon Men’s Singles Champion more than 20 times and is one of the highest-rated Yukon player in the National Table Tennis database.
Yet, Kevin’s legacy is even more profound off the court. As a National Coaching Level 3 Certified Coach, Kevin empowered Yukon athletes to compete at the highest levels, mentoring generations of players with expertise, discipline, and heart. He didn’t just coach, he built the infrastructure to make coaching possible.
When Table Tennis was dropped from the Arctic Winter Games in the 1980s, Kevin was undeterred. He singlehandedly kept the sport alive in Yukon for over a decade, ensuring access to equipment, securing venues, recruiting players, and running clinics in schools across the territory. Thanks to his perseverance, Table Tennis returned to the AWG program in the 1990s, with Kevin at the helm once again.
In 2023, Kevin was fittingly named Contributor to Sport of the Year by Table Tennis Canada, a tribute to his lifetime of dedication to Table Tennis and sport development in the North. From athlete to coach to builder, Kevin Murphy is not just a champion of Table Tennis, he is a champion of community, perseverance, and the true spirit of northern sport.
