WINNIPEG, MB – Canadian Table Tennis history was made this weekend as Akiko Iwase of the Northwest Territories became the first athlete from Canada’s three territories to win a medal at the Canadian Table Tennis Championships.
Competing in the Women’s Over 40 Singles, Iwase earned a remarkable silver medal, marking a milestone not only for the Northwest Territories but also for Yukon and Nunavut. Never before had an athlete representing one of Canada’s territories reached the podium at the national championships.
Her journey to the final showcased resilience and determination. After suffering a narrow 3-2 loss in her opening match, Iwase regrouped and responded with a series of outstanding performances. Match after match, she battled her way through the draw, guaranteeing herself a place on the podium before advancing all the way to the championship final.
While the silver medal will forever be recorded in the history books, the experience extended far beyond a single event. Iwase also competed in the Open Women’s Singles and Mixed Doubles, embracing every opportunity to challenge herself against some of Canada’s strongest players.
Reflecting on her experience, Iwase highlighted the importance of coaching and the welcoming atmosphere of the Canadian Championships. “I now truly see the impact of coaching on athletes from an athlete’s point of view, and hopefully I can give back to athletes in the same way. I didn’t realize how much I had missed the high energy of a competition. It brought me right back to my days as a competitive player. Being surrounded by people, athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, and supporters, all united by one sport creates an instant sense of connection. It’s something truly special. I don’t regret coming to Nationals with such wonderful teammates this year. It was an unforgettable weekend.”
