ALICIA COTÉ AND MO ZHANG TAKE GOLD AT THE 2017 ITTF PANAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

Cartagena, Colombia – The Canadian team of Mo Zhang and Alicia Coté won gold at the 2017 ITTF PANAM Championships in Women’s Doubles.

Seeded #4, the Canadian pair progressed without much resistance to the quarter-finals where the US team of Rachel and Grace Yang proved no match for the Canadians 3-0 (11-4, 11-4, 11-4).

The #1 seeds Bruna Takahashi and Gui Lin (BRA) waited in the semis. While on paper the Brazilians were the favourites, the Canadians led by Women’s team coach Yongjiang Liu took a hard-fought 2-0 lead only to see the Brazilians even the score. The deciding fifth game was even up to 5-4 when the Zhang and Coté started to dominate and scored 6 points in a row, closing out the match and advancing to the finals.

The strong US team of Crystal Wang and Yue Wu were favoured to win the finals. However, a strong performance by the Canadians left the aggressive US pair little chance. By a score of 3-0 (12-10, 11-6, 11-5) Canada’s team – a mix of youth and experience, Coté is 18, Zhang 30 – dominantly secured gold.

Marko Medjugorac and Mo Zhang won Bronze in Mixed Doubles, a new discipline for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Both the Men’s Team and the Women’s Team qualified in the newly established PANAM ZONE for the World Team Championships next May in Halmstad, Sweden.

One half of the PANAM Gold team will compete at the Uncle Pop 2017 Women’s World Cup at the PANAM Centre in Markham, October 27-30, 2017 – for detailed information and tickets go to www.2017wwc.com
