It is a sad day for table tennis. Chandra Madhosingh passed away peacefully on Saturday 19 December 2022 in Vancouver after a brief stay in hospital.
The Canadian table tennis community sends its heart-felt condolences to Chandra’s wife, Donna-Faye Madhosingh, to his family and friends.
Although Chandra is no longer with us, he left behind the legacy of a Giant. It is impossible to forget Chandra. He is deeply ingrained in the core of Canadian table tennis as a player, coach, umpire and administrator.
Chandra initiated the very successful table tennis program at Britannia High School in Vancouver producing many national team members. He led, as coach, the Canadian Junior team on it’s historic one-month tour of China 50 years ago in 1973.
Chandra occupied every possible position or function within table tennis. He was a player, a club coach, provincial coach and national coach. He was an international umpire. He was the President of Table Tennis Canada in the 1980’s. He was also a member of the ITTF’s Media Committee. In 2019 he was elected as a member of TTCAN’s Board of Director, more than 30 years after being its president.
His last “in-person” appearance at the national level was at the 2022 Canadian Championships in Mississauga, ON, in July. His passion for table tennis was contagious. We will never forget his stories, his advice and his sense of humour.
Chandra was also an expert in astronomy with great interest in space and the universe. He travelled to NASA on a yearly basis to stay up to date regarding the latest space explorations and developments.
Although Chandra is no longer with us physically, his spirit will be with us forever and he will remain alive in our minds. May his soul rest in peace.
