Erica Ans is TTCAN’s 2021 Official of the Year award winner. The annual prize acknowledges an individual’s dedication to leadership, officiating and promotion of fair play and ethical behaviour in sport.
A member of the Nova Scotia Table Tennis Association (NSTTA), Erica is well-regarded for her honest approach to table tennis and expertise as an umpire and a referee.
In 2019, Erica qualified as international referee by ITTF at the International Referee School in Japan. Of the 10 candidates that participated in the five-day course, Erica was the only candidate to pass the program. The designation made her the first female international referee from Canada and only the second female international referee from North America.
That same year, she also represented Canada at the Pan American Games in Peru and was appointed as Deputy Referee at the North American Open.
“[Erica’s] strong moral code influences her decisions and supports others,” said Joe Fisher, the NSTTA Tournament Chair, adding that she continuously contributes to the development of umpires as well as young table tennis players across the country.
Alongside the numerous local tournaments Erica has refereed for, she has on multiple occasions been a referee for the National Championships. She is currently and international umpire, having qualified for the Blue Badge Program in 2017.
