Table Tennis in New Brunswick continues to grow, and Ingrid McPhee, representing the New Brunswick Table Tennis Association, recently helped shine a spotlight on the sport during her appearance on Mc&T’s Sports Report (Season 7, Episode 92).

During the interview, McPhee spoke about the province’s emerging Table Tennis talent and the growing enthusiasm for the sport across all age groups. She highlighted several athletes currently making an impact in New Brunswick, including 14-year-old Oliver Woodworth, who is both the province’s top men’s player and leading under-19 athlete. She also mentioned Harrison Woodworth,Michel Ichiy, Joanna Raj, and Isha Prakash as key players representing the future of table tennis in the province.

Beyond highlighting athletes, McPhee also helped educate viewers about the sport itself. She explained that table tennis matches are typically played as best-of-five games, with each game played to 11 points. If players reach a 10-10 tie, the game continues until one player wins by two points. These rules are standardized worldwide through the International Table Tennis Federation.

The interview also explored the global landscape of the sport. While Asian countries such as China and Japan have historically dominated table tennis, McPhee noted that countries like Brazil, France, and Sweden have recently challenged the traditional powerhouses in international competitions.

McPhee emphasized that table tennis is a game that nearly everyone has played at some point in their life, yet at the high-performance level it involves significant strategy, including carefully planned serves and tactical “third-ball” and “fifth-ball” attacks.
