The 2019 US Open were a success for our Canadians with 17 medals in the Junior, Cadet and Mini Cadet categories. This years edition was hosted in Fort Worth, Texas.

Québecs Sophie Gauthier was sticking out with 2 gold and 2 silver medals in the Junior Girls category. Unlucky loosing in the first round of the senior competition against a Japanese player that only lost in the semi final against the later winner Lily Zhang from the USA.

Gold Medal – Junior Girls Single, Junior Girls Double (Isabelle Xiong)
Silver Medal – Junior Girls Team (Isabelle Xiong), Junior Mixed Doubles (Tommy Xu)

We took a few minutes to talk to Sophie about her success and what the future might bring while still being in the present moment.

How do you feel after winning 2 gold and 2 Silver medals?

I am so happy. All my daily efforts and my hard work has paid off.

Did you think you could win so many medals when you arrived in the US?

No, because I competed against players that I did not win against before.

How do you feel about your performance in this tournament? What do you think you need to work on for the upcoming tournaments?

I need to work more on my confidence and to have more quality in my balls.

You have played the World Junior Championships in Thailand, then a week later the North American Open and now another week later you are in the Texas playing the US Open.

How do you feel after being on the road for 3 weeks? Tired? Ready for more? Looking for a nice Winter break?

It was a great experience and I am very happy to have played so many good matches. Now I need rest and then get back to practice hard.

How do you manage school, travelling 2 hours to practice a few times per week, train and playing tournaments?

I have a good set up when it comes to managing it all. I do my school work during travel and competition. I work with my teachers on the things that I need to cover before we go on the road.

You are already selected to try out for the Canadian World Championships Team, The PanAm Cup and to try out at the Olympic Qualifier.  What is your goal for the upcoming year?

I would like to win Canadian Juniors Championship and improve step by step on the international stage.

Québec Provincial head coach Vincent Aumoitte was proud of all the performances and shared a few thoughts with us.

“Sophie was really good in the important moments. She is improving all the time because she practices serious, with passion and a plan.”

Congratulations Sophie for your performances this year. All the best for 2020 to you and all other Canadians.
